Fingernails average roughly 3.5 millimeters of growth per month, more than double a toenail's roughly 1.6 millimeters, and the difference traces back to blood supply: the nail matrix, the living tissue under the cuticle that manufactures new nail, grows faster when it receives more oxygen and nutrients, and hands sit closer to the heart while also getting more frequent mechanical stimulation from everyday use, both of which increase circulation to the fingertips. Feet sit farther down the circulatory tree and are often confined inside socks and shoes, reducing blood flow to the toe matrix. Nail keratin itself is chemically the same tough structural protein in fingers and toes, so a difference in softness is not the explanation. The growth-rate gap is a real production difference, not a measurement artifact of nail thickness, and keratin manufacture inside the matrix has nothing to do with sunlight exposure.
