Why A? And why not the others?

Correct answer: A. The blue whale

The blue whale can reach about 30 metres long and weigh up to around 180 tonnes — heavier than any creature known from the entire fossil record. Its heart alone is the size of a small car, and its tongue can outweigh an elephant. Argentinosaurus is a tempting pick because dinosaurs feel like the ultimate giants, but even the largest sauropods are estimated at roughly 70 to 80 tonnes — less than half a big blue whale. Megalodon, the giant extinct shark, was enormous for a fish at perhaps 50 tonnes, yet still far short of the whale. The woolly mammoth, despite its fame, was only about the size of a modern African elephant. The secret is water: buoyancy supports a body that gravity would crush on land, which is why the all-time record holder is a swimmer, not a land giant.

An octopus has three hearts: one systemic heart that drives blood around the body, plus two branchial hearts that each push blood through a gill to pick up oxygen. The extra pumps exist because octopus blood uses hemocyanin, a copper-based molecule that turns the blood blue and carries oxygen less efficiently than our iron-based hemoglobin, so the circulatory system needs reinforcement. A single heart is the intuitive answer because that is the plan we know from mammals, birds and fish. Two sounds plausible if you picture one pump per gill and nothing else, while four feels like a safe guess for such a famously strange animal — but it overshoots by one. Strangest of all, the main systemic heart stops beating whenever the octopus jets through the water, which is one reason octopuses generally prefer to crawl.

Correct answer: B. The peregrine falcon

In its hunting dive, called a stoop, the peregrine falcon folds its wings and plummets at well over 320 km/h (200 mph) — one trained falcon was clocked at 389 km/h (242 mph) — making it the fastest animal of any kind. The cheetah is the classic trap answer: it is only the fastest runner on land, topping out near 100 to 110 km/h, roughly a third of a stooping falcon's speed. The sailfish holds the equivalent speed title in the water, and the pronghorn is North America's long-distance sprint champion, but neither comes close to the falcon's dive. The falcon survives this violence with remarkable adaptations: bony baffles in its nostrils tame the ram-air pressure, a third eyelid wipes its eyes clear mid-dive, and its body tolerates pull-out forces that would make a fighter pilot black out.

Correct answer: D. The African elephant

African elephants gestate for around 22 months — the longest pregnancy of any mammal — and give birth to calves already weighing roughly 100 kilograms. The marathon gestation is thought to give the calf's large brain time to develop, so a newborn can stand within minutes and walk with the herd within hours. The blue whale seems the obvious answer because it is by far the biggest mammal, yet its pregnancy lasts only about 11 to 12 months — a calf that grew inside any longer would become impossibly large to birth and nurse at sea. The giraffe is a strong near-miss at roughly 15 months, and the sperm whale, at around 14 to 16 months, has one of the longest gestations among whales — but the elephant outlasts them all. Bigger body does not always mean longer wait.

A giraffe has just seven cervical vertebrae — exactly the same number as a human, a mouse, and almost every other mammal. Instead of adding bones, evolution stretched each one: a single giraffe neck vertebra can be about 25 centimetres (10 inches) long, linked by ball-and-socket-style joints that keep the neck surprisingly flexible. Guesses like twelve, fourteen or twenty-four feel right because a neck that long intuitively should have extra segments — and in birds it genuinely does, since swans carry more than 20 neck vertebrae. But the mammalian body plan is remarkably locked at seven, a constraint so strong that even whales, which barely have visible necks at all, still keep seven compressed cervical vertebrae. The giraffe is simply the most dramatic demonstration of how far nature can stretch a fixed blueprint rather than redesign it.

Correct answer: B. Spiders and scorpions

Horseshoe crabs are chelicerates, the group that contains spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks — modern genetic studies place them firmly among or beside the arachnids, and they even breathe with 'book gills' that mirror the book lungs of spiders. The name and the hard shell make crabs and lobsters the natural guess, but crustaceans have antennae and chewing mandibles that horseshoe crabs completely lack. Clams and snails share the seashore and a shelled appearance, yet they are molluscs, an entirely different branch of the animal kingdom. Sea turtles resemble them only in the domed silhouette and the habit of hauling ashore to lay eggs on beaches. As a bonus twist, horseshoe crab blood is pale blue and so exquisitely sensitive to bacterial toxins that medicine has relied on it for decades to safety-test vaccines and injectable drugs.

Correct answer: D. The oceanic dolphins

The orca is the largest member of Delphinidae, the oceanic dolphin family — essentially a dolphin scaled up to nine metres and six tonnes, with the same toothed jaws, echolocation and tight-knit social pods as its smaller cousins. The word 'whale' in its name is the trap: it likely traces back to sailors calling them 'whale killers' after watching pods hunt great whales, and the phrase later flipped around. Baleen whales are a tempting choice because of that name, but orcas carry rows of interlocking conical teeth and no baleen plates at all. The tall triangular dorsal fin gives an orca a shark-like silhouette slicing through the water, yet sharks are fish while orcas are warm-blooded, air-breathing mammals. And seals and sea lions are no relation either — they are among the orca's favourite prey.

When Turritopsis dohrnii, the 'immortal jellyfish,' is injured, starving or simply aging, it can collapse its adult swimming body into a blob of tissue and reorganize itself back into a polyp — the juvenile, seafloor-attached stage — through a process called transdifferentiation, in which fully mature cells switch into entirely new cell types. In principle it can repeat this cycle indefinitely, though in the wild most individuals are eventually eaten. The tardigrade is tempting because of its legendary indestructibility, but it survives extremes by shutting its metabolism down almost completely, not by growing young again. The axolotl can regrow lost limbs and even parts of its heart and brain, yet its body still ages forward like any other salamander's. The planarian flatworm regenerates a whole body from a fragment, but it never rewinds through its life stages the way this fingernail-sized jellyfish does.

Why B? And why not the others?

Correct answer: B. The Greenland shark

A 2016 study in the journal Science radiocarbon-dated proteins locked inside Greenland sharks' eye lenses — tissue formed before birth and never replaced — and found lifespans of at least 272 years, with the largest female estimated at 392 years, give or take a century. These Arctic deep-water sharks grow only about a centimetre per year and may not reach sexual maturity until around age 150. The bowhead whale is a strong runner-up: at over 200 years it is the longest-lived mammal, but not the longest-lived vertebrate. Galápagos giant tortoises are the classic longevity icon, yet their well-documented ages top out around 175 to 190 years. The koi carp owes its spot here to the famous story of 'Hanako,' a fish claimed to be 226 years old — a charming tale whose scale-ring dating has never been scientifically substantiated.

Correct answer: C. Imploding vapor bubbles that flash with light and near-solar heat

The mantis shrimp's club accelerates like a .22-calibre bullet leaving a rifle, moving so fast that the water behind it cannot keep up and rips apart into low-pressure cavitation bubbles. When those bubbles implode, they briefly generate temperatures of thousands of degrees — approaching the Sun's surface temperature — and even emit tiny flashes of light, a phenomenon called sonoluminescence. Prey is effectively hit twice: once by the club itself and once by the bubble's collapsing shockwave, a combination that can crack snail shells and has shattered aquarium glass. An electric stun is a reasonable guess because electric eels genuinely hunt that way, and an ink jet borrows from octopuses and squid, but neither trick belongs to this crustacean. A suction whirlpool sounds plausible too, since many fish gulp prey with suction — yet the mantis shrimp's weapon is pure blunt-force physics.
